It has been stated previously that in the upcoming Runaways Film tentitively titled Neon Angels that instead of portraying the bass players who went through the ranks of The Runaways as they were they'd instead create a fictitious character that melding all of the bass players that were in The Runaways into said characters personality. I was curious as to what the die hard Runaways fans felt about this. I personally am saddened by this news.

I believe the movie will be focused on the friendship between Cherie and Joan with the Kim Fowley character, also in a lead role. The other players should be supporting roles, from what I understand. Works for me, since Jackie and Lita have opted out of involvement in the project.
Anyway, you can only fit so much story-line into a two hour movie!
Long Live The Runaways!

I think that instead of inventing some weird frankenstein monster version made of bits and pieces of all the bass players, they should have just written Jackie into it. It would make sense. Vicki wasn't even really there until Cherie was gone, and since Cherie is a main character, I doubt there will be much (if any) focus on the band as a foursome. As for the other bass players, they weren't really super important to the Runaways story (no offense to them, but honestly, I couldn't name them or pick them out of a police line-up or anything).
Just my two cents (or perhaps a nickel, due to the Canadian exchange rate).

I thought it was a bit wierd. I personally think that Jackie should be portrayed. But I'm sure the movie will Rock! I wonder how Jackie feels about this? In Edgeplay at the end Jackie and Vickie say something about "bass players revenge", maybe THIS is a slight revenge back? Hmmm. I agree w/ Gus above though. Personally I hope Lita has only 5 min. in the movie, since she loves to "Poo" on her Runaways legacy.

i agree with the jackie idea. it only stands to reason. this is by far the line up that The Runaways were most known for. if production hasn't started yet i think we should start a petition stating that jackie fox should be included in the movie even if she herself has no involvement in it but at the same time jackie may have stated that she didn't want her likeness used at all and that may be why this has taken place. something to think about. until we really know what happened we shouldn't really assume and by the time we do know it might be too late to change anything. i actually talked to jackie yesterday so maybe i'll ask her what the real deal is.

It was also mentioned to me that Jackie is a lawyer, so maybe THAT has something to do with it, litigation and stuff. Plus, she DID say she didn't want anything to do with the project so maybe you're right shadesofgray, maybe Jackie DIDN'T want to be mentioned. If you find out, let us know!

The name changed around the end of July 2008. I think this Variety article is the first time they used The Runaways for the name instead of Neon Angels. Posted: Mon., Jul. 28, 2008, 9:00pm PTRiver Road to finance 'Runaways' Floria Sigismondi to write, direct rock biopic By TATIANA SIEGELRiver Road Entertainment has stepped in to finance "The Runaways," the rock 'n' roll biopic about the '70s all-female rock band featuring Joan Jett, Cherie Curie and the late Sandy West. Film will be written and directed by Floria Sigismondi, best known for helming musicvids for David Bowie, the White Stripes and Marilyn Manson. Art and John Linson are producing alongside Bill Pohlad. Jett will exec produce the film (Daily Variety, April 17, 2007).
"The Runaways" is casting and is slated to go into production in late fall.
"It's great to be in business with River Road again," said Art Linson. "Bill and his team were fantastic partners on 'Into the Wild,' and we were looking for an opportunity to work with them again."
Film follows the rock band from its early days on the Sunset Strip through the girls' meteoric rise to their dissolution and disillusionment.
River Road's credits include "Brokeback Mountain," "Lust, Caution" and "Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus." The indie production and finance company is in production on the Terrence Malick-helmed drama "The Tree of Life," starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn.

I would have loved to have seen Jackie portrayed as herself, but then again I've always had a thing for Jackie. Even in the original book Neon Angel, Jackie is specifically referenced so to meld her character with other band mates that came later is strange at best. I'm sure I'll love whatever they do but I would love it more with a Jackie character in it. If they follow the story all the way to the demise of the band it will be weird and not realistic if the same bass character is still with the band.

All I know is that I can't wait for them to be fully casted and the production starts!!! I wonder if they have Cherie's character casted and just not announced? Hmm, guess we'll find out soon! I'm excited about this! The Runaways is going to get some serious recognition w/ this!!! You go gurls!

I'm sure they'll have all members represented well. Even if the story is focused on Cherie and Joan, the whole point would seem to be to tell the story of the band; and what's great about it from a script/character point of view are these 5 different personalities all in the mix together. I hope they find the perfect Cherie; If I were a 17 year old actress, I'd want to play Lita. She's a fiery Italian, and that to me (as an actor) would be a meaty role! Anyway, I can't wait for updates/casting/PREVIEWS! NEWS!

It IS kind of funny, how all the talk about bass player melding is based on one, possibly bogus, on-line casting call. My guess is that we'll all find out how little we knew, once the movie is released! Gus
