Ok I'm being a little dramatic with the title But I don't think that anyone would argue that the release of the Runaways movie today would be anything less than a watershed moment in the band's history. Finally the band that so many of us have admired and supported (in the face of much derision) for years have finally become worthy of mainstream attention. While some of us diehards may hate the fact that the Twihards will watch this movie just because Kristen and Dakota are in it - I am ecstatic that the Runaways music will get carried forth to a new generation who otherwise wouldn't have have had the opportunity to listen to the Runaways music at all. Some will listen. Some will stay with us. Our girls get to be listened to. That's gotta be a good thing.

Here, here Heartbeat. Much agreed. I'm posting a review of the movie for you that I sent to all my friends in Australia, who won't see it for a few months yet - it gives nothing away - but as a die hard fan of 30+ years just to let them know what to expect. It's just my opinion and I hope am not opening myself to attack. If it happens I'm deleting it. Here goes:
OK, I loved it! If you don't know EVERYTHING about the band it's an insightful look at their journey into the Creem Magazine 70s' rock world. If you do know anything about the band I recommend checking all knowledge at the door and you won't be disappointed.
Michael Shannon steals it as Fowley. Fanning turns in a respectable performance as Cherie, but lacks that raw natural rock-star edgy appeal Cherie had at that age and made her the perfect front-person. At 15, Cherie seemed to ooze a sense of worldliness and gave the impression she was born in that corset and platforms. I didn't get the same sense from Fanning at 15. Oddly KStew was just KStew in leather and not too far a stretch from the girl we have seen in the plethora of interviews of late. However, her rock-ability was quite believable. Kudos to the costumes and sets. There's a sly shout out to Foxes with an appearance by Robert Romanus who played Scott in that and Joan's guitar teacher in this. It's a shame the other girls don't get a lot of screen-time as the potential was there, but Sandy West's character is given just enough room to cement she was an intrugal member of the band and friends with everyone. Lita Ford was wasted, as Scout Taylor-Compton seemed to embody a pretty good representation as Lita. I could not help but think Riley Keough (who plays Marie Currie) would have been a way better choice for Cherie, but unfortunately she's not a box office draw. Oh and bass player Robin doesn't have one line which says it all.
If you have any affinity with this band I highly recommend it. But remember it's just a movie trying to encapsulate four years of one bands journey into 105min. The music is great, and the live performances do manage to capture the excitement of the band. Believe me I had my reservations that this movie was re-writing history, and apart from the obvious (a fully leather-clad Jett in 1975?) and a few other movie liberties, I have to say I left those reservations in my seat. Highly worth the price of admission - and to not have to explain who The Runaways are when people ask my favorite band - priceless. GO SEE IT!

Thanks Heartbeat and American Knight. I enjoyed hearing your thoughts about the movie. April 9th seems like a long way away.

Thanks AK for your review for us fans down under! Much appreciated. I have wondered how Dakota is going to go with acting as Cherie - I just thought her to be a bit too 'lite' for the role. Not an aspersion against Dakaota's acting talent - just that Cherie had a certain sexy/aggressive/confidence feel to her frontperson role I didn't know if Dakota could get acting AS her. I guess I will wait and draw my own conclusions when I FINALLY get to see it! And Sunneydey - thanks but I'll be waiting until JULY! ::)On a happier note, it's my birthday on Easter Monday and I know a friend has bought me a signed copy of Cherie's book on the internet. Might post some sort of review after I've read it. Cheers everyone and have a good Easter!

I won't be seeing the movie, as I'm under seventeen and understand it was pretty butchered. I will stick to clips of Edgeplay and Neon Angel. The new version is quite good. A bit more sweary, but we are talking about the Runaways.
Before I post a whole review I'll get going to the review page for that. I don't want Jettigre out to kill me.
