Hi
I know JJ and Runaways since quite a few years and allways liked their music. Since some weeks I'm more interested in them then before because I got a concert dvd with live footage of the Japan tour and a complete concert of this tour and their performing and acting on stage is just magic!
So I started to spend some time in searching for informations of this band and become a picture f whats going on that time, especally JJ life in the punk scene in LA late 70s with help of pictures from Jenny Lens, Brad Eltermann, Interviews (from Dec 78 for example), Punk turns 30 website and so on, also her career during 80s which was more in touring and 90s which was more in producing other bands and so on.
But allways you get to her of Kim as an bad manager and the group as not beeing serious and not be played in radio, nobody was really taking care of them.
Normally if I'm interested in it I try to get a band documentary, there is still one called Edgeplay as I know but unfortunaly it's just in english without german subtitles, and that's a problem for me because I come from germany and my english is just good for understanding what's written but have some probs to understand if natives speak and so on ...
I just heard that Cherie has a sexual relationship with Joan and Sandy, so both are lesbian or bisexual too? Or isn't it right? And what is said about Kim in that movie? And what about Cherie who is getting pregnant during a tour?
I hope it isn't too much if some of you could teach me about these points or other interesting facts you maybe know abou that band. I really would be interested in sĀ“this background knowledge.
I normaly jsut buy it if there is a docu about a band I'm interested in but I'm not native english speaker so it's difficult for me than.
thank you all and beeing hot of the Runaways movie next year ..
greets

Okay, for one, please don't say 'dyke', it's a derogatory term. Lesbian, homosexual or gay is the word to use. Rumors are that Joan is possibly bisexual or gay, but is for nobody to confirm other than herself. Sandy, I'm not totally sure about, but i have heard she is/was gay. And Cherie has said she only dabbled with bisexuality.

Oh, please don't say dyke. That's a really bad thing to say. I'll give you a break since you know basic English. Cherie said that she 'experimented' with Joan but I don't remember about Sandy. Nobody knows for sure if Joan is bisexual or a lesbian but she said in an interview that it's in her music (so I'm just gonna guess she's bi) I've heard things about Sandy being with girls but I don't know. This is basically what they said about Kim: he's an ass hole. He made sure the girls didn't totally get along so that they wouldn't team up and get rid of him. He verbally abused them. I think Cherie said she wishes someone would blow his brains out (or something along those lines) Cherie got pregnant during a tour (I don't remember which one) and she had to go out and get an abortion so she could stay in the band. Other facts: Cherie quit the band at a photoshoot. She had to leave early and when the photoshoot was going really good. The photographer threw his Nikon on the floor. Lita got really pissed, kicked down Cherie's dressing room door and started screaming at her. Cherie couldn't take it anymore so she just quit. There's many other things to say but I just can't remember them all at the moment. Sorry Here's this in case you haven't read it: blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=242586186&blogId=474018410

OK sorry for this bad word ... jsut didn't know it, but changed it right now! Sorry, it really should sound bad. I don't have a prob with it btw does anyone knows an concret example of what Kim done with the grls what makes him to such a bad guy, I know he often changes bands by losing interests in them, just seeing the business and try to get money...

I just heard that Cherie has a sexual relationship with Joan and Sandy, so both are lesbian or bisexual too? Or isn't it right? And what is said about Kim in that movie? And what about Cherie who is getting pregnant during a tour? greets In Edgeplay, which I own and just watched yesterday, Cherie says she "experimented" with bisexuality with Joan and with Sandy. No one in the band has ever said publicly whether any of the other members was gay or not. It is generally understood that Joan and Sandy were/are gay (not necessarily together). Where there's 34 years of smoke, there's probably fire. Cherie says in the film that if her dad knew what Kim did, he would have shot Kim. And she says she hopes someone still will. She also says she was sleeping with their road manager Scott Anderson, and had to have an abortion during the recording of their second album. Jackie Fox says Kim called her into a room with all the rest of the girls and asked if she slept with road manager Scott. She says "No!" and Kim says, "well you're the only one that didn't then" Cherie also says about Kim that he was in a hotel room with all the girls one time, and told them that "He was going to teach them the right way to f**k". Cherie never says whether or not he actually did. Sounds like some pretty illegal stuff was going on with these girls, none of whom was legal until September 1976, between the drugs alcohol and sex. Someone could probably STILL go to jail. No wonder they all "Speak in Riddles"

But if he really touched some of the girl against their willings I think after broken up Runaways or years later now they allready would have speaked about it so he gets his penality or not? I just can't imagine that he do something illegaly, and nobody will claim this, after years now it happened nothing and he is an old man. So if he done something this wouldn't be along penality for him anyway... It's more normal that all stars take drugs or alcohol but if their manager has treated them in that way and the others know that, why didn't anybody talked about it before? Because after disbanding there was no reason to fear him ... As I know he was an horny guy, just see the girls as objects in one way, but also wrote songs for them and so on, so maybe they were not only sex objects for him ... btw without him there wouldn't be The Runaways!

Gulli, maybe without him there is no Runaways....but the talent the girls had would have found an outlet one way or another. If they would have had a real manager starting out, they more than likely would have ended with greater success than what they did.

But what about their second manager, I think they calle dhim Toby. Was he also such a bad manager? Because in the end of 1977 they do not have Kim as manager anymore. And they stayed together nearly ofer one year with new management then. But they disbanded because of musical differences or not? So if they would have been stayed together they maybe get another hit that bring them more succes, so not only the management is the factor that they were not succesfull in the US, but the harmony between the members was bad, JJ more into punk, Lita into metal and so on, this worked until a special point but after 1978 they disbaneded because it didn't worked anymore ...
A lot of bands played together some years before getting succesfull, for example Blondie or Slade, too.
So in my eyes they had a chance to get bigger but different ideas and styles of music they like and maybe other quarrels make it im possible to work together anymore. Not only Kim in the first years, even he is a horny bastard - but nobody knows what he really done...
Remember the Ramones who never get really fame but were a influence of bands that become a lot of fame then! Same with Runaways I think .. too sad.

Toby Mamis was thrust into a position he did not want, and he was definately not the right person for the job. Their manager needed to be like Brian Epstein, someone who could offer guidance and support, yet be strict and forceful when required.
PS: if that "word" is so negative, why is it on the front of Joan's guitar? maybe not all feel the same way?
