why does everybody hate this track? am i alone in thinking it's an ace showcase for lita's skill as a lead guitarist? critics & fans alike seem to agree that the song is crap- 2 of the liner notes on the 'queens' cd dismiss it as 'dubious' & 'hasn't worn well', & even jackie fox, on her blog, said it's not a song she likes. but i think it's brilliant, because lita's solo is unaccompanied- & i've never heard an unaccompanied solo, before or since.

I like it, but it's not one of my favorites. Jackie misremembered borrowing the bass line from "Dazed and Confused" but it's actually from Zeppelin's version of "You Shook Me."
As for the unaccompanied solo, Jimmy Page did that all the time when they played "Heartbreaker" live. In fact, Lita's solo borrows heavily from it.

I like Johnny Guitar. Especially live in Cleveland.

Thanks for posting the live versions Jettigre. The live versions actually sound better than the studios ones.

It was interesting what Cherie said about the song in question from her book, "In an attempt to pull the album into a "harder" direction, Lita fought tooth and nail to get a terrible blues-rock song called "Johnny Guitar" onto the album. It was, in my opinion, one of the worst songs the Runaways ever recorded." Don't know about that however I do agree that it is the worst song on that album, I'll probably get some slack for this but I could never warm to it, I just don't like it at all.

Their first UK tour was in the Fall of 1976, and the song is on the Cleveland Agora bootleg from summer 1976. So they just didn't play it for some reason. Did you see any of those shows from their first UK tour, wilkinss77?

Did you see any of those shows from their first UK tour, wilkinss77? no, i didn't. i discovered the band just after the london gig at the roundhouse- maybe they played JG then, but i just assumed it hadn't been written then, because it wasn't on the 1st album but was on the 2nd- my bad! but they definitely didn't play it in '77 & '78- i was at those london gigs!

They probably stopped playing it after Cherie quit. There were a lot of songs I think they never played again after Cherie left: Dead End Justice, Neon Angels (I doubt Joan could sing that one), Is it Day or Night...
