here is my appraisal of the runaways albums:
'the runaways' patchy. some great tracks, ('cherry bomb', you drive me wild', 'blackmail', 'american nights') but this is a bit poppy on the whole, for a band that played hard rock. not a bad 1st album though.
'queens of noise' brilliant! their best album, i like every track, including the much-maligned 'johnny guitar'. & this IS hard rock/heavy metal, not poppy at all.
'live in japan' great live album. i don't usually go much on live albums, but this, like bowie's 'live in santa monica', & cheap trick's 'live at the budokan', this is an exception. previously unreleased tracks, & versions of 'neon angels' & 'american nights' that are superior to the studio versions.
'waitin' for the night' another great album. again, i like every track on this. nearly as good as 'queens', especially when you consider that they were 2 members short, with new bassist vicki not yet having found her feet within the band.
'and now- the runaways' disappointing. too many cover versions, & much of the material is weak. there are a few good tracks ('i'm a million' springs to mind) but on the whole, this should've been much, much better. i never bought this when it was released on vinyl, & haven't yet got it on cd- but i'll probably get it to complete my collection.
'flaming schoolgirls' haven't heard this yet, but i understand it's very good, because of all the previously unreleased material. one that i intend to get.

I remember hearing their debut on LP many years ago and thinking the production sounded flat. But the CD sounds so much better, it's like a whole new album.
The live-in-Japan tracks on "Flaming Schoolgirls" are great. I can only guess they were left off the Live album because there wasn't room. Now why don't they do a reissue of Live in Japan with bonus tracks, like they did with The Who's Live at Leeds or Deep Purple's Made in Japan?

Waitin for the Night is my favorite. I prefer Joan singing to Cherie. Cherie is more of a pop singer.
And Now The Runaways is my second favorite. It has great tracks like "Takeover" and "Black Leather" as well as "Little Lost Girls" and "My Buddy and Me"
Overall Id say
The Runaways 6/10 Queens of Noise 7/10 Waitin for the Night 10/10 And Now The Runaways 8/10

I like Live in Japan the best. I can feel energy in the studio, but not as much live. And "California Paradise", "Neon Angels", and "American Nights" are so much better live. Anyway my least favorite would be........Probably And Now...The Runaways. I felt there were very few good cuts there. Although I suppose thats a bit judgemental as I've only heard a couple of the songs.

The Runaways- Probably my favorite album of all-time (along with Master of Puppets) The album that got me into the band. It has songs that i can relate to so well. Me being 17 and having a rough up-bringing, you know, i can really connect to songs like "Thunder", "Rock & Roll" (i know its a cover, but whatever.) and "American Nights." if i could i'd give it an 11/10 but thats cheating, lol. Definitly 10/10 for me.
Queens of Noise- Another favorite. Absolutely love every track, especially Midnight Music, I Love Playin' With Fire and Heartbeat. That song, Heartbeat, has IMO some of the best vocals i've ever heard in my whole life. 9.5/10
Live In Japan- Spectacular live album. Captures the Runaways live perfectally. Every song is amazing, but the "stick-outs" are: California Paradise, Gettin' Hot and C'mon. Love the vocal harmonies during the chorus in C'mon. 9.5/10
Waitin' For The Night- I'm a Cherie fan, so you know, i kinda have my own ideas about the last two albums, but this album is sooooo awesome. Has an almost punk feel (?) 8/10
And Now The Runaways- Really good album, really different than the last one. Just the sound of it can prove that. Absolutely love: Saturday Night Special, Mama Weer All Crazee Now, Takeover and one of my fav Runaways songs, My Buddy & Me. I dunno, maybe its just me, but i find something kinda... depressing about My Buddy & Me. i dunno, i'm weird, hahaha. 7.5/10

Yeah, I was listening to the live version of "Cmon" recently, and it sends shivers up my spine the way Cherie and Joan harmonize.

The Runaways had a few really great songs... But Queens of Noise, as a whole was awesome!
But as a Joan fan, I would have to say Waitin' For The Night is amazing!
All the albums are great and I love them all for different reasons
