Stumbled across this while reading the New York Times' archived articles about CBGBs: (Warning: PDF file - the review is down at the bottom left of the picture) www.nytimes.com/packages/pdf/arts/20061016_TEEN.pdfAug 4 1976 review of CBGB concert by Robert Palmer: “…The Runaways have enough skill and performing savvy to carry long sets without becoming overly repetitive…At present, though, they leave the listener with lingering doubts. While several of them, notably rhythm guitarist and vocalist Joan Jett, are assured performers, others, principally the lead vocalist, Cherie Currie, seem inexperienced and perhaps a bit nervous.” And that was some of the best US press coverage they got!

what? She always looks professional and confident on stage By the time they went to Japan, she was confident on stage (though still nervous in interviews). But in 1976 she was still getting used to being on stage. On the Cleveland Agora bootleg (July 1976) the one time she talks to the audience, she sounds pretty hesitant.

I downloaded a Runaways show from Syracuse, NY 1978.
The audio is ok but somewhat distorted .
Anyway, at the end there is an Interview with Joan Jett and this is what Joan had to say.
The audio is really crappy of the Interview so this is what I did hear Joan say.
1. People think girls are god d@mn ho's they are f*cking stupid.
2. Kim Fowley didn't start The Runaways it was myself & sandy.
3. Jackie is conceded . she is more business minded person she wanted to be more a manager then be in a rock band and was not cut out to be in a rock band.
4. Cherie's boyfriend and co-manager of the band just wanted money and f*ck Cherie.
5. Kim was really good to us in the beginning but not in the end.

Most of the early reviews I saw of The Runaways were fairly positive. Many made comments to effect that they were young and still learning the ropes, but had great potential. It seemed like after 'Queens of Noise' came out, I don't know, maybe some of the good ole boys were feeling a little threatened because the reviews started to get worse 'ironically' as they were getting better. One of the things that I recall from seeing The Runaways in early 1977 is how confident and polished they looked onstage. Especially Cherie -- she seemed very relaxed and comfortable. You can see it in the YouTube vids.

She's the first one to admit it. Read the interviews. They partied. Wouldn't you have?
