Back to Patti Smith. I actually got in to her music after discovering The Runaways in late 1976. I got to see her in concert when she was touring for 'Easter'. 'Because the Night' had just hit the top 40 and she was finally gaining some 'mainstream' success. That concert, to this day, is one of the best I ever experienced. We were up against the stage and got to interact with her quite a bit. She seemed so genuinely warm and friend -- even thought I was wearing a Runaways t-shirt! I was surprised, years later, to hear her feelings toward The Runaways.

I guess I'll have to admit that fans of Patti just keep their taste-buds in a different place than me. I like having mine in my mouth.

Oh, I'm quite fond of old stinky pits Patti. I also must take exception with Old Man because she is a very well-respected rock legend -- an artist's artist. And if Bono (another prick with massive, inflated ego) christens you as legend, well then, I guess it must be so.
"I don't f**k much with the past, but I've f**ked plenty with the Runaways."

Ok, just 2 cents. Artist VS Performer/Entertainer
Now think about that.
Trust me there is a difference. LL-the avatar just keeps cracking me up! LOL It's like the high school yearbook shot for Student Custodian.

Hey, if there are any other Patti Smith fans out there I found a site that's giving away free copies of the movie 'Patti Smith: Dream of Life' on Bluray. techinstyle.tv/sonicmaster/Enjoy!

A group that I would consider very closely related to The Runaways is Girlschool, but don't think I have ever heard any of the members of either band comment about one or the other. Their music leaned a little more toward heavier rock/metal, but musically they were much closer to The Runaways rather than say The Go-Gos. girlschool have, in fact , commented on several occasions that they dig the runaways (as does their pal & one-time mentor lemmy kilmister) & were influenced by them.

A few years back I read an interview with another one of Patti's enemies...Deborah Harry. According to Deborah, Patti was VERY competitive back in the 1970s. Deborah went on to say that she had spoken to Patti recently and that Patti was a lot nicer. There's also a Blondie documentary where Jimmy Destri mentioned that everyone in Blondie was a big fan of Patti Smith but Patti was NOT a fan of Blondie. Apparently she once barged into Deborah's dressing room and told her that there was only room for one of them. As far as the Runaways are concerned, I don't think she gave a s*** about their sexuality. What concerned her was the fact that they were competition. As far as Patti was concerned there was only room for one female rocker...............HER!! I've been a fan of Patti's for years and have never heard her compliment Suzi Quatro in any way shape or form. The few that she's complimented were ones who were in the business long before she was....like Grace Slick or Marianne Faithfull. gary valentine also comments on this in considerable (& very interesting) detail, in his book, 'new york rocker'. in it, he vents his frustation on patti preventing blondie from getting gigs at cbgb's by ganging up with tom verlaine in order to hog all the gigs they could, thus preventing other bands (including blondie) from playing there. it wasn't just female musicians she had it in for- it was any NEW bands she saw as possible threats. valentine says that for more than a year, it was almost impossible to get a gig there, as all the gigs were pre-booked by patti, television, or any of their cronies such as the dictators- & that it was common knowledge among many punk bands that they did it to stop new bands getting a foothold there.

I had no idea that Patti Smith was so competitive with other female artists, how disturbing.
I do remember a blog post Jackie Fox posted a decade ago when she said that The Runaways met Patti backstage at a show and when they walked into her room Patti said to them "Get the f**k out of my dressing room!" According to Jackie they were fans of Patti's and didn't have anything against her until she treated them that way.
