This should apply everytime you open an email, but at the moment there are two really obnoxious ones going around. One has an attachment that is supposed to give you real time information on the storms in Europe and the other says something about Condoleeze Rice kicking the German chancellor. If you get those, delete them. The attachments are of course virus-laden.
Anytime you get an email of ANY kind with an exe attachment, always delete it. Even if it's from someone you know. If you routinely email yourself or have files emailed to you with exe files, even if you sent them to yourself from work, virus check them anyway. You never know if your work computer has something that snuck on that day, especially if you're on a PC. Grisoft has a great free virus checker where you can right click and Test for Viruses. You can pick it up at grisoft.com.

I'd also like to point out that if you get email supposedly from your bank (or any other institution) that asks you to download a spam fighter, a virus checker or anything else that is attached, drop a little line to the FBI or whoever handles that in your country and DELETE. A whole bunch of people overseas just got bilked because they thought their bank had emailed them a new spam fighter program.
People suck sometimes.
