I'd go for Bonnie Raitt and Lucinda Williams alone, if I was able to go. "Side of the Road" as done as a demo by Veruca Salt, is one of my favorite songs of all time.

Bonnie Raitt Man... "I can't make you love me"... if that song can't tear your heart out, you don't have one

I don't know if anyone watches Nashville Star, but Angela Hacker did a really nice version of "If I Can't Make You Love Me." Nothing's like Bonnie's but that girl can sing too. When Bonnie does it though she could ask me to go run into the middle of I-40 in rush hour and I'd probably ask if I should bring her back a coke. Some people can just grab you.
Are either of you going to this thing?

I'm seriously thinking about it. I have another trip in May so it will depend on how seriously damaged my finances are going to be. I also see that Marcia Ball will be appearing and I love her too.
BTW, did anybody see that someone used Raitt's "I Can Make You Love Me" as an audition song on American Idol Tuesday night? One gripe I have about that show is that someone else from another season sang a Bonnie Raitt song on the show and was criticized by Paula for the song choice saying something like that it was not modern or popular enough or something like that. So when this new girl sang "I Can't Make You Love Me" (which she sang beautifully by the way) all the judges said it was very "unoriginal". So the gripe is why does everybody have to sing the same typical stuff on that show? Sheesh! Likewise, remember that girl a few seasons ago tha sang "Orange Colored Sky" and got panned? Great song from another era and she sang it very well but the judges still complained about the song choice.

I can't stand American Idol. It gives me the skeebies. The only thing they do right in my opinion is be mean. I see it as a test. Believe me, what they say is NOTHING compared to some of the things that have been written towards the people I've done sites for in the past. A Get Well site I did for Nicole Bass in particular inspired some of the most virtriolic, disgusting, horrendous, borderline evil behavior I've ever seen online. You have to be able to take a lot when you're in entertainment. The way I see it, no matter how good or bad you are, at least one person will love you to the end of the earth and at least one will hate everything about you. Both without ever meeting you. So I think a little dose of reality (as far as reality gets on that show) is a good idea. If you can handle Idol judges you've got a good starting point. If you can't, you'll never be able to handle it when you get letters saying the writer hopes you die a painful death because of reasons ranging from you're being a woman with attitude to the fact that your hair is black. Believe me, I am not kidding.
As far as song choices go, it does annoy me. It's supposed to be a talent show? So what matters is the talent? Apparently not always. I've seen people sing something in a way to bring me close to tears but all that mattered was, "I never heard of that song." They even do it on Nashville Star. On the other hand, when I was taking poetry and song crafting classes the big lesson was always to make the song memorable. I think they're going on the assumption that if the average viewer doesn't know the song initially, they may not remember what you sang and therefore not remember how you sang it. I don't know if that's entirely true but I wouldn't be surprised if that's what they're thinking. I always prefer the people who sing what they know they sing well and love, rather than the ones who extend Ann Wilson's notes so much they almost lose the band because they have no clue how to really handle the song.

I don't care for American Idol much either... i prefered "Star Search" if anyone remembers that.
It was all about doing what you can do the best you can.
AI is just glorified kareoke.

Case in point is last night's show which I happened to have on while I fixed dinner. One girl sang a Bonnie Raitt song and she didn't get good marks from the judges because of her song choice and they practically crucified a girl that sang an Aerosmith song. When she asked what she could do better next time Paula I think it was told her to choose a "pop" song next time. Sheesh!

And sure enough the girl who sang the Bonnie Raitt song was sent home, the girl who sang a Pretenders song stayed but was the first runner up to go home, and the girl who sang the Aerosmith song was able to stay but I'll bet it's because she is very good looking. I guess my musical tastes are unlike the majority of Americans. I can't even watch the Grammys because I hate all of the music.
