This is just going to be a little thing I do every month or more when I have time, where I pick out something cool and give it a little review. I want to in order to point out some things I think deserve more mention and, since this is Off Topic, you can ignore my recommendations just by ignoring the threads. If you like it though, feel free to drop in whenever I do one.
December, 2006 - Susan Marshall is Honey Mouth by Susan Marshall
Buy It!
If you don't know who Susan Marshall is and you like bluesy rock, you should get to know her. She has one of the best voices in music today (or yesterday).
You may somewhat know her as a background singer for the Afghan Whigs, Lynyrd Skynyrd and over a dozen more, but I first came across her as the lead singer for The Mother Station. Their only album, Brand New Bag, was as close to ridiculously awesome as a blues-rock album can get (and that's pretty d*** awesome). "Stranger To My Soul" may be the greatest song ever written in my opinion.
In 2002, Marshall put out Susan Marshall Is Honey Mouth, which isn't as hard rock as parts of Brand New Bag, but is full of well-written songs that showcase her great voice. Highlights are "Eyes of Love," "Love Me Again," "These Things," "Black Sea Blues," "I Don't Have To Crawl" and "Nightime," but every song has some serious positives. It goes from gentle, smoky ballads to upbeat bluesy tunes with a seriously addictive nature.
If you like blues and some folk, or to be more direct, if you liked Nancy Wilson's Live at McCabe's or The Mother Station, you will at least like, if not love, this cd. It's on iTunes as well, so check it out.
