I am ten years older than the girls and at their same age (15) I formed my Rock & Roll band in 1965 when that was extremely uncommon. We became locally very well-known. We still had to go to school the next day though :-)
By the next year (age 16) We were already playing in the best adult places in town and outside of town too.
So I am here to say that I sympathize with The runaways. Especially after reading the book "Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway" by Cherie.
The Big Thing that was missing from their story is, and I can only say that now after 'old age', was PARENTAL SUPERVISION.
Me and my band had that. The Runaways didn't.
I have been listening to their records recently (since the movie came out) and as far as I am concerned, they didn't deserve the lack of attention as real musicians in the mid 1970s just because they were underage teenage girls. Lita Ford (no matter that she was a Royal Bitch) deserves the recognition as an excellent guitar player independent of age and gender.
(It's a great thing that Japanese audiences were not prejudiced though.)

Lita is not a bitch. You can't go by Cherie's book which is just her version of events (which I am sure has been shaped by things that have happened over the years). I love Lita Ford.
