It seems that Jett has some problems in paying the due royalties for some of her major successes...
After making the two classic albums on Blackheart Boardwalk, Jett and Laguna signed to MCA Records and released the Gold-certified Album and the critically acclaimed Glorious Results of a Misspent Youth. 1986's Good Music was released for new label, CBS, followed by the multiplatinum Up Your Alley, which featured collaborations with noted producer/songwriters Desmond Child, and Ric Browde. Unfortunately Jett and Laguna refused to pay Child and Browde the royalties they were owed, and went it alone again following up the brilliant "Up Your Alley: with a very uninspired and unsuccessful follow-up, The Hit List, an album of all covers.

Producer Ric Browde seems to confirm these facts in a 2004 interview:
Joan Jett = she's amazing - perhaps the most underrated rhythm guitarist I know. Solid with a strong work ethic... it would be nice if she got away from the albatross around her neck, Kenny Laguna, and also if she actually paid Desmond Child and me the royalties she owes us.

Laguna and Jett thought after the success of this album that they could return to doing things on their own (and they refused to pay either her band or her producers their royalties) - but they were mistaken - and after shedding Child and Browde they didn't produce much else memorable. Their follow-up, an album of all covers, was a critical flop. To date, it has been more than 10 years since Joan Jett has released an album of new music in the U.S.
