The Runaways movie got more GOOD reviews than BAD reviews in The United States.
It didn't do good because of apparition distribution did NOT promote it like they should.
Alot of us haven't even seen it ourselves because it was NOT released worldwide like they said. It only made it to 353 screens total in the USA from what I have read which apparition distribution said they were gonna release it to over 1,400 screens. They are to blame. They lied to get to movie but then never promoted it like they said they were gonna do. I only seen the TRAILER on TV - twice when I am a reality junkie & always watching TV & only 2 times did I ever see the TRAILER !
I just hope the DVD has alot of extra footage behind the scene's ,interviews or an unrated version would be cool ......

Too bad the R rating was necessary.

I'm one of the idiots who thought the movie would be huge. I thought Joan would be bigger than she ever was. I thought the GREATEST HITS cd would be a big seller (despite it's weird tracklisting) . I thought we'd all have to surrender our spots close to the stage at Jett shows because the crowds would be so much bigger. I thought Cherie Currie would become the third Runaway to become a household name. I thought Joan would feel pressured to make a brand new studio album thanks to her new huge fan base. You know how people like to argue over who is bigger....Pat Benatar or Deb Harry/Blondie? I actually thought it would now be Pat vs Deb vs Joan. Boy do I feel dumb!!!

Cast and director's commentary has to be a given, there was so much hype apparition really f**ked up big time. Should have been given a Stateside wide release when the buzz was strong, what could have been eh. Commercial-wise bad times but introducing younger generations and new people to the band good times And hey it's the music that's important, nothing better than discovering new music I also noticed that someone on youtube managed to upload little snippets of the movie, this may interest those like me who can't wait any longer for it to come out. www.youtube.com/user/200515022

It didn't do well because although it was titled "The Runaways", it was more or less "The Joan Loves Cherie Story". The storyline was not appealing to the great masses. Siggy's screenplay was juvenile, and played out like a jr high musical. Although KS's acting ability suited her to this role...DF not so much, she makes an admirable attempt to portray Cherie but falls short in that regard. It was a train wreck in the making from the beginning. The distribution was not to blame.

I disagree with every word rknron said. But , then again - I always disagree with anything you say cause you NEVER have nothing nice to say about The Runaways or their solo career's. Why are you always negative & bashing The Runaways ? I mean your entitled to your opinion just like me but - It's always negative. For once , I would like you to say something NICE about the girls ! ;D

Brightside : It didn't go straight to video. The Runaways did gain more exposure and fans.
Darkside: It didn't do as well as most fans would have liked. The members couldn't all get behind the film.
My observation on why teenagers didn't swamp the movie theaters is that The Runaways disbanded over 30 years ago. There is no current line-up and even if there was they would all be over 50! I try to turn younger people on to bands like L7, 7 Year Bitch, The Runaways all the time. They like the music but they really don't get that inspired by these bands because they arn't around anymore. Young people like to go to shows and see the bands they like in magazines and TV, the want to belong to something current and in the now. That's not how I was when I was younger, but I think today most young people seem to be this way.
Another thing too...on Joan and Lita's solo career. They have two marks against them...they are women that play hard rock and they are over 50. How many women have hit records in rock/pop music after they turn 50, not many...maybe Cher, Madonna, and Melissa Etheridge in pop but you throw in that hard rock component and it is about zero. Not saying I agree with the massess, but that is the truth.

JT, you are wrong. I have supported the band from the beginning financially and physically. Did you ever help them load out their gear after a show ? I did. I have always respected their ambition and musical talents as female rockers. Most of my peers didn't. I've supported their careers as individuals after the split also. How many Sandy West Band concerts did you ever go to?. How many times have you seen Cherie in concert?.. Yes, some of my post are negative. I don't like the fact that Joan sued Jackie. I don't like the way The Runaways movie turned out. I don't like the direction Lita's music went. As you state about opinions, you can think what you want, doesn't mean it is correct.

Thats cool you got to be a roadie for a day & help out the girls load their gear. I was a toddler at that time but if I had been older, I would have helped them like you. As far as seeing Cherie or Sandy in concert - I have never seen either one. I have attended over 140 Joan Jett shows tho & have my own joan experiences like you do with The Runaways. If Cherie was playing a FREE show across the street , I don't think I would attend. I'm NOT a fan of Cherie's - Never have been , Never will !!! Sandy , I would have killed to see her play live but in my teen years sandy never played anywhere near me.
I AGREE that joan shouldn't have sued jackie. I love joan but totally DISAGREE with her decision to sue jackie. I still say that was all Kenny's doing's. Yes, joan can make her own decisions but she never does it's always Kenny that makes the final decisions in her career. I don't want to believe that but it's true.
Lita's direction in music is the same to me. Lita has always been very sexual in her career. Wicked Wonderland is that same sexual in your face kick ass Lita that she has always been on all her albums. The only thing that I wished Lita would have done is a FULL TOUR to support the album when it first came out.
